Hey everyone,
With our next software release just around the corner, I wanted to give you a heads-up about an important change to our privacy policy and tracking development.
Human hands come in all shapes and sizes, and appear in countless different poses and angles. With VR tracking, we also encounter a wide variety of lighting and environmental conditions. That’s why, starting August 15, 2015 when our new privacy policy goes into effect, we will begin using infrared hand image data to train and improve our tracking software. This applies only to developers using the VR tracking beta – everyone else is unaffected.
This infrared hand image data consists of small image blocks, each 32 pixels square (example above). Here’s what you need to know:
- The data includes no device ID, account information, or other features that connect it with individuals.
- At this low resolution, fingerprints and other identifying features cannot be seen. Since VR mode involves the device being mounted on your headset, your face should not be visible.
- The image itself is cropped very closely around the hands, not the background environment.
You can choose not to share performance and hand image data with Leap Motion at any time by unchecking “Send Usage Data” in the Leap Motion Control Panel.
