Measure distance from the leap motion

Hello,

For a project I am doing i need te determine for different settings the distance towards an object in several directions.
I was wondering if with the leap motion this would be possible if for example I calibrate by first putting 1 hand at a fixed positionin front of the camera of which i know the exact location. Would it be possible to have the leap motion then give me info on a new location and how accurate would you estimate this to be? I have not yet bought a leap motion but am thinking about it if this were to be possible. Thanks in advance!

Sure, this should be possible; as far as math and programming problems are concerned it should be relatively trivial. The Leap Motion Controller is extremely accurate; depending on exactly what aspect of the hand you use for the measurement, it should be accurate to within less than a centimetre.
