Hey everyone,
With the 3D Jam starting tomorrow, we wanted to give you the latest on our Unreal integrations. Right now, we recommend that everyone working with Unreal Engine build with getnamo’s community plugin.
For a bit of background – developers looking to combine Leap Motion with Unreal Engine have two options. The first is our official plugin, now available natively in Unreal 4.9. This plugin is designed to be a quick and reliable integration that makes it easy to drop hands into an Unreal scene.
The second option is getnamo’s community plugin, which exposes more of the Leap Motion API via Blueprints. Getnamo’s plugin provides some really great features for Unreal devs, including HMD mode.
Recently, we’ve started working with getnamo to bring Image Hands functionality to his plugin. At the same time, with the release of Unreal 4.9, we discovered an issue in the official plugin that prevents the hands from moving properly in relation to Actor transforms.
Since we want to ensure that everyone has access to the latest features during the six-week 3D Jam, we’re recommending that you use the community plugin. We anticipate that Image Hands support will land in the next couple of weeks; in the meantime, you can prototype your experiences using the rigged marionette hands included in the plugin.
Once Image Hands become available, we’ll provide you with all the information you need to quickly and easily integrate them into your project. Stay tuned to the forums for updates as we work on expanding our Unreal support! To get started, check out getnamo’s getting started guide and this blog post with tutorial videos. If you encounter any issues with the plugin, please report them here!
