Leap motion hand tracking issues ( Upside down & Disappeared )

Leap motion is the primary iteration method in our VR apps. We use the latest version of SDK but we had some major issues with hand tracking. This happened during series of VR demonstrations which we conducted recently at a innovation conference. Hands were upside down most of the time when we started our app and had to manually adjust the unit. In some occasions hands were disappeared in VR. Although we had some intermittent issues at past it was not this bad. We were wondering whether this is to do with any environmental factors. There were all types of sensors ( used in agriculture industry) inside the exhibition center and also electric fences as well. Appreciate if you can let us know if there are any known reasons for this. We are planning to go for another major event soon and would like to know any solutions for these issues.

What kind of venue was the conference in? Do you run into the same issue after moving back to your main work place?

I would recommend checking the tracking settings to see if Auto-orient tracking is enabled. Were the hands oriented incorrectly every time you started the application regardless of the controller orientation?

How much open space did you have in your booth at the conference? To minimize interference from external factors, we usually recommend keeping the area in front of the user clear of objects.

Event was to showcase agriculture's digital future so It was in a farmland area inside a big temporary Marquee. As I mentioned there were other exhibitors with all types of sensors. It worked fine in our office place.

Yea. Auto-orient tracking is enabled. Should that be disabled always ? Most of the time hands were oriented incorrectly.

We had a 3 meter x 3 meter space and kept the area clear.

I usually keep Auto Orient tracking enabled but the fact that the hand orientation would be upside down made me think that could be causing issues. I'm curious if disabling it would solve any of the issues you were experiencing.

Since you mentioned that the setup worked in your office with no issues, it's most likely interference from other things at the conference.

I believe our events team used to bring blackout curtains to event venues to eliminate interference from external sources.

Also one other issue even we experience in our office is that suddenly size of the hand becomes very small. This comes back to normal when we try getting back hand into the scene few times. Do you know any solution to stop this happening ?

Don't think I've ever seen that happening. Could you try getting it on video so I can take a look?

Here is a screenshot of what happened. It was mostly happening with the left hand. Every second time I tried to get my hand into the scene this happened.

Hmmm, that's definitely strange. Did you get a chance to capture this behavior on video? Do you also run into the same behavior in the Leap Motion Visualizer or does this only occur in your project?

When I checked with the Visualizer then it worked fine. Si is this something to do with Unity / project settings ? Much appreciate your help to solve this issue.

Thanks for sharing the video. It definitely looks pretty ridiculous I've forwarded this thread to our team internally to see if they have any ideas what could be causing it. Since the issue appears to be specific to your project, there may be some strange issue causing it.
