Leap motion for gesture recognition

I want to create a sign language translator using leap motion. Can leap motion be used to detect half of the human body if placed in such a position that it lies in the range ?

If you mean, can the Leap Motion controller detect more body parts than hands, then no. The software can only translate hand motion and gestures into digital input.
