How or can Leapmotion detect smaller than expected hands?

In my research application I would like to track smaller than expected hands; think of a racoon as a worst case scenario. LeapMotion right out of the box does not detect small hands. Is this possible, for instance, is it possible to scale the hand model (downward) to accomplish this?

Also Leap motion does NOT capture the hands of a one year old child.
