This type of question would be easily addressed with an official sensible summary of the basic Leap algorithm and some official capture images. Following the patents filed, the Leap is detecting silhouette edges of fingers (and, presumably, tools and palm) against any sufficiently dark background (no emitters in FOV, no reflectors). It is not a scanner - surface reconstruction from silhouettes requires rotation of sensor or object - and it, per patents, not used to generate a depth map, or to process the surface texture of objects.
