When it comes to online multiplayer gaming (and beyond that, really, any online interactive space), server-side issues can be absolutely fatal to a real-time experience. To put it bluntly, latency can be a killer, and dealing with different platforms can be a massive headache.
Richard Williamson's recent post on taking Leap Motion data to the cloud using DDS offers a solution to this problem. It doesn't use a server, it's massively scaleable, and works with virtually any platform. It also has the potential to be used in IoT applications!
